Initial Setup
After downloading and installing Happy Birding Journal, you are presented with the splash screen.
This is displayed for about 4 seconds.

Then upon first usage, a screen prompting you to enter a Nickname and a Location is shown.
These are only used when you choose to share a bird recording of your own from your 'My Birds' list.

Create a New User


After clicking the 'CREATE USER' button, the database will be initialized. This prepares the database by creating the tables needed, along with providing a default checklist.
After the database has been initialized, the 'Main Menu' screen appears.

Select 'My Birds'. The 'My Birds List' appears. Unless this is an upgrade, the list will be empty.
This is a list you can use for daily entries, or just to record casual bird sightings during your daily activities.

Entering a New Bird
Now we can go ahead and add a bird to our list. Note that the 'Life List' works in an identical fashion.
From the menu select 'Enter New Bird'.

We are now presented with the 'New Bird Entry' screen.
For an example, let's say we seen a Northern Cardinal on the 7th of January, 2016.

Start by typing the name of the bird, and the auto-complete will try and find a match.
Select the name from the dropdown.

After selecting the name and date, if the GPS is active, it will place the Latitude and Longitude coordinates in the 'Bird Location' box.
Note that you can put anything you wish here, including city names, or anything to help you remember where you saw the bird.
It is helpful to enter something along the lines of a city or address so when you view the entry later, it can be pinpointed on a map.
Click 'ENTER BIRD' to complete the entry.

Pressing the 'SET...' button will bring up a map where you can pinpoint the location of the bird sighting.
Press 'OK' to set the location.
Note that you will need a wifi or data connection to set the location in this manner.

After entering the bird, it will appear in the list. This is our first entry.
Note that the bird gets automatically entered into the Life List if not previously entered.

My Birds List Activities
From the 'My Birds List' screen(Main Menu then tap 'My Birds'):
Go ahead and tap an entry in the 'My Birds' list. Note that the 'Life List' works in a similar fashion.
The details of the entry are shown along with 3 options: 'Edit...', 'Share...', and 'Add To Life List'.
Here you can edit the bird's details, share the bird for others to see, or add it to your Life List.

Selecting 'Edit...' brings you to the 'Update or Delete Bird' screen.
Make any changes that you wish, and select 'UPDATE BIRD' to confirm the changes.
Note you can press 'SET...' and change the location via a map.
You can also delete the bird entry from here.

From the menu select 'Sort...'.
The Sort My Birds dialog appears.
From here you may sort the birds alphabetically, by date or by a custom time frame. For our example, select 'By Time Period'.

The 'Select Time Period' dialog appears.
Select the time frame you wish and the birds in that time period will be displayed in the 'My Birds' list.

Long press an entry and if there is a wifi or data connection available, it will attempt to find the location entered, whether it be GPS coordinates, or an address.
Here, a 'European Robin's location is pinpointed.
Note that the 'Life List' and 'Shared Birds' both have the same feature.

Statistics
Select 'Statistics' from the 'My Birds List' menu. Note that the 'Life List' works in an identical fashion.
The statistics for the My Birds list appears. By default it is set to a 7 day period. In our example, it is set to 'Weekly'.
The selections can be set to Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, and Show All modes.
Use the forward and back arrow buttons to move forward and back in time.

Tap an entry and the details will show.
In our example, we have tapped the European Goldfinch entry.

Checklists
From the menu select 'Checklist' and the 'Checklist' screen appears.
For this example, let's assume we seen 2 Willow Ptarmigan's on February 27, 2013.

Start typing the name of the bird, and the auto-complete feature will help you to select the bird.

After selecting the bird, long press it in the list, and the dialog to check off the bird appears.
Check off the bird and press 'OK'
Note that tapping 'Set...' will let you set the location via a map. A data or wifi connection is required for this feature.

The bird is now shown as checked in the list.
To de-select, simply long press again and uncheck it.

Saving Checklists
From the menu select 'Save...'.

The 'Save Checklist' dialog appears.
For this example, let's save our entire North_America checklist. Select 'Save Entire Checklist'.

Our checklist is saved to .csv successfully.
The file will be saved to the external storage directory. This is usually '/sdcard', so in our example the file was saved to '/sdcard/HappyBirding/previous/North_America.csv'.

Custom Checklists and Importing or Organizing Checklists
From the 'My Checklist' screen, open the menu and select 'Checklists...'. The 'Import Checklist' screen appears.
From here you can download a new checklist, import previously downloaded checklists, import previously saved checklists, or create a custom checklist.
Note our North_America checklist is available under 'Previously saved Checklists'.
For our example, select 'Create Custom Checklist'.

The database is prepared with a generic list to select from.

Long press a bird to select it, and long press again to de-select.
When you are satisfied with the selected birds, name the file and click 'Save'.
We have named it 'mycustom' in our example here.

Our saved custom checklist is now available under 'Previously saved Checklists'.

Import Checklist

Backing up and Restoring the Database
From the menu select 'Back-Up'. The 'Back-Up or Restore the Database' screen appears.
From here you can Back-Up the database, Restore the database, Export My Birds to .csv, or Export My Life List to .csv.

Here in our example, our database was backed up to '/sdcard/HappyBirding/happy_birding_100'.

Please note that when restoring a database, the imported database will replace all existing data currently on the database. This includes checklists, and user name.
